Day 3 - May 13th

This morning, we braved the public transport system to make our way to Nirmas place for breakfast, a sumptious repast in good company.

Nirmas bike

After we left Nirmas, we spotted a green bike, then we went to look at St Michaels church and the Spanish Riding School, although the horses weren't exercising until Tuesday. So we went accross the way and looked at the Sisi Museum, housed in the Stephan apartments.

The museum is over two floors, the lower housing the royal cutlary and dinner sets, more of them than you can imagine. Upstairs is the gallery outlining the life of Empress Elisabeth of Austria.
Afterwards, we headed to a nearby cafe and spent time wondering the city, stopping to see two churches and browsing several shops.

To top off the afternoon, we stumbled on the Wolf Apostelkeller, an underground restaurant (and well worth checking out if you get a chance). The food was good and the entertainment ejoyable.

Thus ended our visit to Vienna - Day 4 was spent travelling home.

Day 2 - May 12th

Another early start (sort of). We were to meet at the Schönbrunn Palace, but we were delayed in Karlsplatz and arrived after the others. We took the classic tour. We got handsets with prerecorded spiel on each of the exhibits. Here are a lot of rooms in that place. No pics of the inside, as photography was prohibited.

If the inside was large, the outside was massive. In the sunshine, the gardens were lovely, with lots of statues (32 in all), each representing deities and virtues. Elizabeth has the pictures of all of them, except the ones that were being renovated.

The fountain was magnificant and the view of the city from the Roman Ruin was amazing (as was the climb up the hill) and the weather was sunny.

After indulging the sites, we visited the mazes. Well, the others did, Myself and Elizabeth enjoyed some ice-cream and waited for the intrepid explorers to return.

When they got back, it was time for Andrea and James to leave for the airport. After saying our goodbyes, we explored the gardens some more and visited the cafe to have some apple strudle, while Albena and Nadya learnt how to bake strudel in the Strudelshow, held every hour.

After the show, Albena and Nadya went to see the History and Art Museun, while we headed off to the find the Sisi Museum (which happens to be beside the Spanish Riding School near Michaelerplatz). On the way we found the Ministry for European and International Affairs.

Outside the Spanish Riding School were several horse drawn coaches giving tours. As usual, where there are horses, you'll find this:

We met up with the others there and decided to find a cafe and relax. We met with Nirma later and after a long trek (passing Cafe Mozart and the Butterfly Museum) to a Pakistani restaurant at the Uaschmarkt (which turned out to be closed) and so we trecked (and caught a tram) to a Tibetan restaurant.  The momos here were delicious.

On the way back to the Hotel after dinner, we met two political studies students on the U-bahn, and had a nice chat.
